Join the Capital Area IT Council's Cybersecurity and Software Development Peer Groups at MSUFCU as we discuss the topic with a panel of professionals who are working on behalf of their organizations to create a more agile, secure and efficient environment. We will discuss topics ranging from benefits of the approach, how to implement it in your environment, best practices, pitfalls, etc.

Moderator: Joel Carlson, Palo Alto Networks

Joel is currently the Global Sales Manager for Bridgecrew at Palo Alto Networks.  He has been selling technology solutions for over 25 years, and has specialized in cyber security, particularly AppSec, over the past decade.  He has worked with Fortune500 companies, Municipal and Local Governments, and Federal organizations across the Globe.  Joel is passionate about helping organizations create partnerships across development and security teams. He loves working with senior executives to align their strategic vision to the outcomes that can be gained by these same partnerships. Joel serves on the leadership team for the LGBTQIA+ Employee Network Group at Palo Alto Networks, and supports many organizations that foster growth in tech including OWASP, Girls Who Code, and NASCIO.

Panelist: Bryan Holland, State of Michigan

Bryan is currently a Security Architect working with the State of Michigan.  He has 35 years of experience in IT starting out installing Ethernet cable (ThickNet, ThinNet, 10/100 Base-T) to network administration (Banyan Vines, Novell NetWare, Windows).  As time and development platforms progressed Bryan moved to developing applications and managing databases.  Bryan has worked on very large systems such as a job exchange and an online examination system and most recently he was an architect on Voter Registration systems for the State of Michigan which focused on scalability and security.  The security focus and developer experience lead him to join the Michigan Cyber Security team as an Application Security Architect who promotes security in the development process.  Over the last 10 years he has been adopting an agile mindset and applying it to development and project management.  This naturally lead to DevOps and later DevSecOps.  Bryan works to encourage automated security scanning into build and release processes as well as promote overall delivery of value through DevSecOps.

Panelist: Jason Wojnar, Accident Fund Insurance

Jason has been in Information Technology for 27+ years in numerous roles from development to management and recently landing in architecture.  Throughout his career, Jason has developed in various architectures (mainframe; client/server; n-tier; etc.) and their associated technologies (COBOL II; PowerBuilder/Visual Basic; JAVA; .NET; etc.).  Over time methodologies have changed to those being embraced today: Development/Operations and Development/Security/Operations.  On any given day, this Principal Architect could be involved in solution architecture, engaged in evaluation/onboarding of new technologies/vendor solutions, or heads down with production support, all while keeping the BIG picture in mind.  So what does this have to do with DevSecOps....EVERYTHING...

Panelist: Reid Curry, Greenstone Farm Credit Services

Reid has been working at GreenStone FCS for six years.  He has spent most of his time at GreenStone as an Application Developer, helping to maintain and create line of business web applications.  His recent move into his current DevOps Engineer role provides him with the opportunity to be stretched and learn as he uses Infrastructure as Code to help GreenStone stand up their first-ever environments in Azure
